MOKOPANE – The Sunrise Primary School boys and girls hockey teams recently respectively ranked fifth and sixth during the National Hockey Championships in Pretoria.
The boys’ team played a total of six matches in which they reigned undefeated against the Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and North West and lost two crucial matches against Eastern Cape and the defending champions the Western Cape.
The girls’ team also played a total of six matches in which they won against the Northern Cape and North West, they drew one match against Mpumalanga and lost three matches against Gauteng, Eastern Cape and the Free State.
Statistically the boys earned 12 points out of a total of 18 and they achieved a prestigious fifth place whilst the girls obtained seven points out of 18 points and came in sixth.
Their coach, Kubs Kubiku, proudly said: “It was a tightly contested tournament where all the provincial teams displayed professional hockey skills.
“The Sunrise teams appreciated and enjoyed every minute of the tournament as well as the level of hockey that was played.
“Remember, in hockey it is not only about winning every game, but it is also about the enjoyment and love of the sport. Every game is a learning curve that helps the player to grow as a sportsman/woman.”
“It is an honour to be part of the National Championships for the second consecutive year and to represent Limpopo.
Our resolution for this year is to built on our experience and to defend our title as the Limpopo provincial champions,” a determined team said.
The school director, Elsabe Schoeman and the entire team acknowledged and appreciated the unwavering support from Folang Medical Centre, Zebros Flame Grilled Chicken Restaurant and Arons Sport as well as the other stakeholders that pledged to support the development of hockey in the Waterberg District.
