Limpopo matrics excel

POLOKWANE –  In the city, Hoërskool Pietersburg excelled among the public schools, obtaining 100% passes among the 237 candidates writing the examination.

Yet, despite high hopes, the matric results still left many disappointed as several districts regressed year on year, including the Capricorn district of which Polokwane forms part.

Anza Tshipetane from Mbilwi Secondary School is the top matriculant for 2017. She is congratulated by Chupu Stanley Mathabatha (Premier) and bishop Barnabas Lekganyane (Zion Christian Church, leader).

The Capricorn district pass rate saw a decline from 66,7% in 2015, 60,9% in 2016 to 59,7% in 2017.

The 2017 results were released on Friday, 5 January.

A total of 83 227 candidates sat for the National Senior Certificate exams in Limpopo.

The pass rate in Limpopo saw a percentage increase in bachelor passes from 18% in 2016 to 21% in 2017.

Boitumelo Ngoepe from Dendron Secondary School receives the award for being one of Limpopo’s top three matriculants. He is congratulated by Chupu Stanley Mathabatha (Premier) and bishop Barnabas Lekganyane (Zion Christian Church, leader).

Of the candidates, 20 011 achieved diploma passes and 16 809 higher certificates, 11 achieved the NSC qualification and 04 Endorsed National Senior Certificate.

With this in mind, the MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe, said it was sad that the Capricorn and Mopani districts’ performance decreased.

Daniel Swarts from Hoërskool Pietersburg receives the award for being among the top three matric learners from Chupu Stanley Mathabatha (Premier) and bishop Barnabas Lekganyane (Zion Christian Church, leader).

Vhembe was named the best performing district and Kgetjepe congratulated them for remaining the best performing district despite several disruptions during the past year.

Pass rates by district:

1. Vhembe – 76,6%.

2. Waterberg – 69,4%.

3. Mopani – 67,7% (65,7% in 2016).

4. Capricorn – 59,7% (66,7% in 2015 and 60,9% in 2016).

5. Sekhukhune – 57,3%.

The top circuits per district show Capricorn taking a back seat to Vhembe and Waterberg, finishing third amid the province’s districts.

Even though the overall picture shows Capricorn doing worse than other years, Hoërskool Pietersburg excelled among the public schools, obtaining a 100% pass rate.

Schools that obtained a 100% pass rate:

• Hoërskool Pietersburg with 237 passes.

• Merensky High School with 164 passes.

• Moreko Secondary with 132 passes.

• John Mutheiwana Secondary with 60 passes.

• Bathopele Secondary with 53 passes.

Top three matriculants from the respective districts:

1. Anza Tshipetane from Mbilwi Secondary School in Vhembe. She obtained a total of 1 718 marks.

2. Daniel Lourens Swarts from Hoërskool Pietersburg in Capricorn. He obtained a total of 1 715 marks.

3. Boitumelo Ngoepe from Dendron Secondary School in Capricorn. He obtained a total of 1 710 marks.

The MEC’s special award went to Shikwambana Thulani, a visually challenged learner from Vhembe.

Kgetjepe told Review a team of officials has been assembled to pay special attention to underperforming schools across Limpopo as per the Academic Performance Improvement Plan.

Northern Academy was awarded the first position in the top three best performing independent schools in Limpopo following the announcement of the 2017 matric results.

“We expect all schools to perform above the national norm of 65% as well as a 30% combination of bachelor and diploma passes.

“We must double our efforts and be serious about empowering children by continuously improving their access to quality education which will ultimately open doors to jobs and further qualifications,” according to Kgetjepe.

In closing, the MEC encouraged learners who failed to progress to try again and know that people do not always succeed the first time around.

“There are many options available for you going forward.

“There is a Second Chance Programme to support learners who have not been able to meet the NSC requirements,” he said.
