[WATCH] A ‘Kaleidoscope’ of thoughts at Tommies new club

POLOKWANE – As Technical High School Tom Naudé is a technical school, most people might think that the learners do not participate in cultural activities.

However, the Tommies decided to prove to everyone that they are capable of much more at the first meeting of the Kaleidoscope Prose and Poetry Club.

Parents, the school governing body, teachers and learners gathered at the school on Tuesday evening, where the learners that are part of the club received certificates.

Three learners, Phutego Malatji, Maggie Makwela and Kiara De Agrela performed pieces while an old learner, Amu Makhabi and old teacher, Wessel Cronjé also each performed a piece.

Annette Meiring, organiser of the club, and Piet Holtzhauzen, head of the school, also performed a piece each.

“Have you ever wondered how words can influence your life? Poetry is about transforming thoughts. It is way to fight despondency and loneliness. The club offers learners the opportunity to learn about poetry and to fall in love with it. It deepens one’s human being and helps express emotion,” Meiring explained.

Meiring also wrote her own piece, which is titled ‘Reality’:

Dink aan iets stouts – dit sit die sprankel terug in jou oë;

Glimlag wyd met granaatrooi lippe;

Jou grasieuese stappie laat koppe draai;

Dra stiletto’s – beklemtoon altyd mooi kuite;

Laat jou hare en ooghare professioneel doen;

ek gaan sit in ‘n hope – nee-val in ‘n gat.

my verstnd staan stil – alle breinselle vasgemoer – niks wil ‘strip’ nie!!!

Al wat in my brein maal is hoe ek, Sanna, ‘n ou gaan vang.

my oë kyk skeel (“needless to say”) – en een oog is blind

my glimlag is skeef met lynstywe lippies

Ouma Hes se boggle is nou nie juis “graceful”  nie, of hoe?

Te veel oorhangende vat om die enkels,

So

Goodbaai stiletto’s
