‘Men have the power to end the violence’

She spoke about how it is important to remember not only women and children but also, the men as they have the power to end this type of violence. “If we started with awareness around men, we wouldn’t have violence in the first place,” she says.

16 Days of Activism
That is the aim of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

It is an international campaign which takes place every year to help raise awareness of the horrors suffered by women and children globally in an attempt to break the cycle of abuse.

It takes place every year from 25 November, which is also the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to 10 December, the day on which Human Rights Day is internationally commemorated.

World Aids Day (1 December) is also celebrated in this period.

This year marks the 16th year  that the 16 Days of Activism is held in South Africa and this year’s theme is Count Me In: Together moving a non-violent South Africa forward.

Although this campaign runs for only 16 days, its objectives are reinforced by a programme that runs the whole year as well as a national plan to fight abuse.

Do your part to end the abuse against women and children, not only for the duration of the 16 Days of Activism, but throughout the year.

Your small contribution could help to end the cycle of abuse.
