POLOKWANE – Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng announced that more than 500 households in Ga-Chuene and Ga-Molepo villages outside Polokwane will be electrified by the Polokwane Municipality.

Nkadimeng said in the past financial year the municipality electrified four villages in Ga-Maja, Ga-Chuene and Ga-Molepo cluster from which more than 700 households benefited.

She said both current projects are estimated to be completed within four months. “As a municipality we have been working hard in the previous years to ensure our residents have access to electricity in their homes,” said Nkadimeng.

She explained they want to accelerate the supply of electricity to these communities and meet the deadline.

“Access to electricity shouldn’t be a luxury and old people shouldn’t rely on firewood to cook and heat water for their children,” she explains. Nkadimeng urged residents to resist from connecting electricity illegally and to use it wisely because it is still a danger if used incorrectly, which may result in death.

Charity Makgalemele (38), a mother of two, said she used to wake up early in the morning so she could prepare water for her children by using a wood fire.

“I had to charge my phone at my neighbour’s house and that was a challenge for me. I feel happy today that in few months we will have electricity as well,” Makgalemele said.

A pensioner in the village, Gilbert Maja (69), said he never thought this day would come and can’t wait to watch the news on television once they have electricity.

Kgoshigadi Ramadimetja Chuene said they feel happy that services are coming to their villages as the municipality has promised.

“We’re glad to see our municipality developing our villages and we believe this will change our lives for the better,” Chuene said.
